Google (chrome) AGAIN goes beyond an expectation ..
By
JD
I like to play with things. Specifically I like to play with Google products. Google seems like a magic box, you never know what are you going to get out of it. Just to show you few magic i had came across within Google search, see below examples:
Search for term "recursion" and Google will explain you what is recursion all about.
Search for term "ascii art" and see the Google logo changing.
Well, for sure, above mentioned findings are not mine but me too love to play with Google products like the guy who have found it. As had said in my one of the previous post one day I was playing with Google chrome's sliding tab. And than just to satisfy my curiosity I tried dropping Mozilla tab onto Chrome window. And than came the surprise out of the magic box. It worked. Mozilla tab became chomre tab !!
Similarly today I was just dragging and dropping chome tabs (I love the way chome tab moves. Just try moving it in IE and you will come to know the diference) to do some time pass. Than an idea came into the mind to test (can't get rid of it somehow) chrome. Just typed gmail.com in chrome's omnibox and immediately I dragged that tab and didn't drop it anywhere :-). What I had expectd was that untill I drop this tab, chrome will not load the site, gmail in my case. Quite common expectation, is not it? Yeah, but Google (chrome) implementation is not common. To my surprise, page was loading !! I was even able to see the page loading in transparent smaller-than-normal window which appears when you try to drag the tab outside tab row !!! was unable to stay without saying, Google (chrome) AGAIN goes beyond an expectation .. and so this post :-) ...
Twitter and a productivity at work
By
JD
Don't judge about this post content from its title. Because in this post I am not going to show you some never-understood statistics and references to standard literature concluding about productivity of twitter users or some thing similar. But on the other hand it is assured that content of this post do talk about a title of this post. Like me, you may also be wondering about why the hell I am making so much of fuss about a little 'title' of the post, right? Actually, I am also not sure why am I stretching so much on the 'title' of this post. Only reason I have for strething is, that is what had come first into my mind while writing this post.
Okay, first thing first. So I am sure you all know about twitter. Since last few months twitter is in news (if at all you are following) because of many reasons. I had not used twitter until I read in a news that Google is planning to aquire Twitter. After reading the news, I thought, let me check what this buzz is all about. I simply logged-on to twitter and tried using it. Now instead expecting me to explain, what is this twitter all about, I request you to log onto twitter and explore it.
After twittering for few days and following few of my omnipresent friends on twitter, I had completely stopped using it. It was time for me to concentrate on my ever burning and live deadline driven project. Work was very simple but I was stuck in some trivial issue since last few days. So one fine day, I decided to put all of my trials on a paper with a time stamp attached to that trial. I opened a text file. Type command 'date' on Unix terminal. Copied result of it (date command) onto text file and describe about what I have done. I followed this for half of the day. Each 10-15 minutes, I described about what I have tried and what was an expectation and analysis of why it did not happen as per expectation, if at all expectation is not met. And with each description I attached a time stamp. And believe me, because of this tracking, I was able to save my time doing repetative work, which I am habituated to do otherwise. Because I was tracking and aware of what I am trying to do and what is expectation and why is this not working etc. my productivity went up and I was able to resolve that issue in half a day.
Now you may be wondering where the hell twitter comes into picture for productivity. Ok, let me tell you that point as well. If you have already visited twitter, you may be knowing that with each of your twitts a time stamp gets attached automatically showing when you has twittered thhe twit. Only after joining twitter I had noticed this time stamping of a twitts and so I have thought of replicating that using text pad and Unix's date command. If a stand-alone twitter application was available, my work of time stamping could have been reduced. But Murphy is not going let me live happily, looks like. Worry not. Because even if stand-alone twitter application is not available, in currently available twitter web application also you can have your twitts unpublished (private) and achieve same thing :-).
So, next time you are stuck in some trivial problem, log-on to twitter (at your own risk). And yes, don't forget to follow me.
Product thats hangs the most
By
JD
Ever faced an issue when you are in hurry-burry but the product you are using stops working exactly at that time ? Well, you can say this happens because of so called murphy's law. But do not forget there are products existing which proves this law wrong. Okay, so talking to the point, I wanted to know which products do you feel hangs the most? Which products betrays your trust the most? Which are those products which just makes you frustrated?
I will start with my list of products:
- Internet explorer (almost once a day).
- Microsoft word.
- Microsoft windows (most irritating thing in this is, you tell some hanging window to end NOW using task manager. But that "now" never comes and application hangs forever untill you kill corrresponding "process").
- Adobe acrobat reader.
- Yahoo mail.
- Google docs.
Products which never betrays my trust are:
- Google chorome (never ever seen it hanging, no matter how many tabs you open with it or what you are opening in those tabs).
- Google mail (if it hangs while opening because of slower net connection, i simply switches back to HTML version).
So, whats in your list?

Gogole suggests my name !!
By
JD
After getting listed on Google and Yahoo! searches, below is snaps of Google suggesting my full name (jaydip mehta) when you type jaydip !! It is like typing albert and Google suggesting albert einestein :-). Isn't it??
Well, Google do opimizez its results based on regions, past search history, browser history etc. etc. So chances of your getting different result that what I am claiming, can not be rulled out. In that case, please do not forget to comment.

After seeing Yahoo's cheap search result below one is from Microsoft. Difference is, Yahoo! message was to promote his Yahoo! search, while Microsoft message is to promote his browser Internet Explorer. Message says, "Windows live is designed for you, but may not be for your browser".

Anybody out there who have EVER seen such kind of offensive message while accesing Goggle products ???

No? Ok, not larry page? Fine. Obama?? No? How about Manmohan singh? Still no??? Ok no problem. I let you decide 'whom' to send an email. What can I do is, show you 'how' to do that.
Here we go:
1) Login to blogger.
2) Goto settings->email.
3) In blogsend address (first option itself) field write down mail ID of whosoever you want !!
4) Done.
What? You are doubting weather blogger will ask to approve this ?? Nope. Its a bug (if I am not wrong). Blogger will not ask for approval of receiving party !! Me too was not believing this untill I tried myself putting my other personnel mail ID there and I started receiving an email whenever I update my blog !! Strange, isn't it?
Have fun.. But wait wait wait .. Before going tell me whose mail ID you would like to put?
April fool !!
By
JD

April is aproacing. So is a season to fool people on 1st April. Many could have already started finding new, creative ways of making people fool. You may not agree with me when i say "people have started finding new, creative ways to fool others". You may say, "nobody thinks of making others fool well in advance, this is not any occasion like Diwali or New year where people prepare things in advance". Hmm, you may be right. Even I was also not aware of it. I also had not seen any person preparing for april fool day in advacnce. Well, not atleast among persons we know. But I am sure we are not considering Googlers (full time Google employee) in them. Because Googlers prepare for this day well in advance. Seems unbelievable? Ok, walk through list and link of hoaxes/fools Google has done till now. I bet you its full of fun, enjoy.
Google's search technology that read the user's mind to determine what the user wanted to search for, thus eliminating the step of actually typing in the search query :-). No doubt, this always led to a page full of April Fool's results.
Here Google reveals the secreat behind its PigeonRank (its PageRank in reality) technology. Google makes many humurous references in this article.
2004. Google job oppurtunity on Moon!
Fictitious job opportunities for a research center on the moon.
Gogole gulp was a fictitious drink that would optimize one's use of the Google search engine by increasing the drinker's intelligence. Need taste also? It also comes in 4 different flavours: Glutamate Grape (glutamic acid), Sugar-Free Radical (free radicals), Beta Carroty (beta carotene), and Sero-Tonic Water (serotonin).
"Dating is a search problem. Solve it with Google Romance." Visit the page and click on "Post your Google Romance profile". Have fun.
Need your all gmails on paper? Gogole will do that for you. What? You are environment friendly and don't want to waste papers? Worry not. Google will use 96% post-consumer organic soybean sputum. Additionally service is free & image attachments would also be printed on high-quality glossy paper !!
Missed to wish birthday to someone and you have lied saying that "I have already sent an email at first hour of your birth day"? Wanna make they lie, true. Use gmail custome time. Change time to 6 hours ago, 4 hours ago etc. "Be on time. Every time."
Wait wait wait !! What did you conclued?? You concluded that on 1st Apil Google always launches some products to make you fool?? Well, example of gmail should be good enough for you not to conclude in such a way. Gmail was launced on 1st April, 2004 !!

My updated bucket list
By
JD
It took me almost 3 months to find my other 3 bucket list items, after I had found my first bucket list item. So here i m presenting my those updated 3 items :
- Own a grand piano
- Work for "Google"
- Be a "Roadie"
Let me also take these items one by one and elaborate more.
Own a grand piano

It was my collage time when this thought had struck me first time. At that time my wish was kind of imaginary than real. What exactly my wish was this : Have a cool house (Umm.. short of haveli) at sea shore somewhere out side India. Have a grand piano. And after getting married me and my other half will play it together and get lost into it. This quite 'dreamy' kind of wish i have reduced to just 'Own a grand piano'. Because I feel that "should be able to play piano" can not be kept as a condition while choosing life partner :-).
Work for "Google"

This thought had stuck me first time after I had started blogging. I came across many blogs related to Google (this is one of the reason why I do blogging. You got to know about many many things) after I started blogging. One of the blogs link i got was Google Blogoscoped. I came to know many things about Google from there. That was first blog I had subscribed to which posts 'Google related' information. Currently i have subscribed to Google official blog, GMail blog, orkut blog, Google reader blog and list goes on. After reading so many things from various sources and using Google products, I completely fell in love with Google. And thus work for Google became my one of the bucket list item. BTW, Google tops "100 best companies to work for" list made by Fortune 500 magazine for year 2008.
Be a "Roadie"

Be a "Roadie"
This thought had stuck to me some one or one and half years ago while watching Roadies 5.0. Well, some of you may be thinking that "What ??? He wants to be a Roadieeeeeee ??". OK let me clarify what I like in Roadie. I like their attitude. I like their style of talking, walking and dressing. They show whatever they are. They do not have any problem speaking whatever they feel. I would like to note down two quotes describing their spirit:
"Do not live as if you re king. Live as if no matter who is a king"
"Win as if you are habituated to it. Loose as if you have lost just for a change"
I like all of the rodies because they are different. And that is why being a Rodie is also on my bucket list item. BTW, some of you may not be aware of what is Roadie. Here is wiki link for that.
So whats there on your bucket list? What? You have even not started preparing it? Uff ....
Google (chrome) goes beyond an expectations ..
By
JD
Do you use products which exceeds your expectations? If you uses Google products, I can assume your answer to be 'yes'. For me, all google products seems very intuitive. Say for example, iGoogle. After visiting it, you will have feeling of re-arranging modules by drag and drop. Its very intuitive. So driven by your feeling, you give it a try by drag and drop. Surprise !! Drag and drop works !!
Ok let me share one experience with you. Today I was feeling bored and so started dragging and dropping Google chrome tabs (I get fun by doing that). May be I do that because the way tabs gets re-arranged is nice and in smother way. In Internet explorer and Mozilla that is not the case. So while playing this drag and drop game, word Mozilla came across my mind. So just like that I opened Mozilla and some sites in 2-3 tabs. After opening Mozilla tab a thought came in my mind "Why not give a try draggin Mozilla tab and dropping it on chrome browser?" And guess what. It worked !! Yes, you can drag Mozilla tab and drop it on Google chrome browser !! I said in my mind, "Hats-off Googlers". Really, Google (chrome) goes beyond an expectations ...
All are Googler than who is this 20% of people
By
JD
I was seeing market share for search engines here. It shows 80% market share is with Google. Rest 20% is distributed among other search engines in which Yahoo! has 12% of market share. After reading this statistics I started wondering. Because, all the people whom I know personally and professionally uses Google. All persons who are close to me is conditioned in positive way by me to use Google. In other countries also most of the person related to my work uses Google. Than who is this 20% of people?
One funny answer to it I got from my colleague Dilip Rao is, "Employees of respective search engine companies" :-). And probably that is also they are using because Google is banned there. He he ..
Google's advertisement? Never ....
By
JD
Has anybody seen Google's advertisement anywhere?
This question comes because very recently I heared Yahoo! advertisement on FM radio and now it has also been started coming on TV. Sometimes I wonder how come Google is so popular without even advertising about them selves. And my wondering stopped, when I read "Ten things Google has found to be true" (Please read it if you have not already done it. BTW, Out of that ten things I liked 10th one the most "Great just is not good enough").
It says, "... By always placing the interests of the user first, Google has built the most loyal audience on the web. And that growth has come not through TV ad campaigns, but through word of mouth from one satisfied user to another...". I found it correct word to word.

Can't say good bye to Mozilla
By
JD
Google has launched its browser Google Chrome. Being hard core Google fan, I had decided to say good bye to Mozilla after listening this news. But to my disappointment Google Chrome did not allow me to do that by not providing RSS auto-discovery support! Yes, Google Chrome does not allow to subscribe to RSS feeds !!! Such a useful feature for a blogger is not supported in Google Chrome. :-(.
Waiting for next version of Google Chrome with RSS feature ... ... ...
And it happened ... ગુજરાતી ગુગળ, Oops Google
By
JD
Since long I was waiting for this to happen. And it has happed today. Oh yeah. Yours, mine, ours in fact everyone's favorite search engine Google is been launched in Gujarati. Time for celebration for all Gujjus. Lets enjoy. Have not seen it yet? Visit www.google.co.in and you will see link below google's magic search box showing "google.co.in also offered in : Hindi Bengali Telugu Marathi Tamil Gujarati Kannada Malayalam Punjabi. "
Below is the snap of ગુજરાતી ગુગળ, I mean Google:

Since the time I came in bangalore I was seeing dominance of south indian languages everywhere. Google also was first offered in hindi, english and south indian languages. When I was seeing Google homepage, i was used to say to my friend "Why Google is not offered in Gujarati?". He was replying to me making fun of me, "Google walo ko ek high priority mail dal do aur likh do usme ke muje google gujarati me chahiye."....
Patak .................
Patak ........................
Patak ...................
What was that sound? Nothing. I just slapped that guy right, left and centre. Thanks to Google and googler.
Also google have launched Google છબી શોધ. Understood what it means? It may take some time. Because we are so much used to speak 'Google image search' that we will not be able to relate 'Google છબી શોધ' with 'Gogole image search' quickly. But I feel there are some bugs in this છબી શોધ.
The first one is, when you visit this Google છબી શોધ page, it shows Google logo and below that they have written "chhabi sodh"! In english gujarti. Why? Can not it be written in pure Gujarati as "છબી શોધ"?
Second one is, try searching for some thing on છબી શોધ. And you will find some junk characters next to છબીઓ શોધ button, as shown in below picture. I am not sure about this bug. This may be happening because of my browser setting.

Note : When I had first heared about Google (can not remember in which standard), I was pronouncing it as ગુગળ. કદાચ એ નામ (ગુગળ) તો તમે પન સામભળયુુ હસે. ગુગળ ની અગરબત્તી.

Tips for blog beginners
By
JD
Here is some tips or advices for blog beginners.
1) Settings -> Comment -> Who can comment.
My advice: Tick 'Anyone' radio button.
Reasoning:
If you are a beginner, you would like to receive more and more comments. You would love to get comments from anyone. Google search or say Google blog search may lead anyone to land onto your page if your blog contents are good enough. In this case, if some one comes across your blog by any means and if he wants to comment on it, he will be able to do that only if you have kept this option enable. Person will be able to comment on your blog even if he does not have (or want) Google account or Open ID account.
My Experience:
When I had created my blog, I had just sent a link of it to my some of the friends. My friends were also new to blog. They visited a blog and tried to comment on it. But did not succedded. Reason was by default blogger was asking for Google username and password to comment. Everyone is very busy now a days and so no one will care to enter username and password just to put a comment on your blog.
My advice: Enable.
Reasoning :
If you are a new blogger, you would love to receive comments from everyone but you will also like to have control over which comments. You would also like to accept and reject comments based on your choice. For example, You create a blog and write down your thinking, your philosophy, your own unique thoughts. Many of your friends or readers may not like (or say hates) this kind of blogs. So they will just come to your blog and post anything and everything. So as to take care that any kind of comments are not been posted on your blog, you will require to keep this setting on. Other advantage is, if you enable this setting you can reject some suspicious spam like comments.
My experience:
When I had created a blog I had not kept this feature on. So what happened one day was, I had posted a blog on something. One of my friend has posted a comment which I did not like. I was not aware of that someone has commented bad things on my blog. Till the time I came to delete this comment, some of my other friends read that blog and comments. Which I had not intended. If I had kept moderation on, I could have just rejected comment. So catch here is, always keep comment moderation on.
3) Setting -> Comment -> Show word verification for comments?
My advice: No. Do not enable this.
Reasoning :
It discourages readers from posting a comment. Before posting a comment, reader will be asked to enter word like 'sdjhbf73n'. Which is quite time consuming and it also requires person's attention. As mentioned earlier no one has free time. People may like you blog and would like to comment on it only if comment posting is easy and fast. If you enable this word verification, it will make comment posting difficult and slow. I guess, by default this is kept on.
4) Setting -> Comment -> Comment notification email
This can be made on, if you are not moderating a comments. If you are moderating a comment and also keep this on, probably you will get 2 mails for one comment. Initially I had, by mistake, kept both these options of comment moderation and comment notification enabled. So you will get one email where you can accept or reject a comment. If you accept it, comment will be posted and so you will get one more email because of comment notification.
5) Setting -> site feed -> Allow blog feeds
My advice: Make full.
Reasoning:
Most of the people use RSS readers to read blogs.
If you keep this option to none, your readers will not be able to read your blogs from RSS reader. They will even not come to know, when you have posted new blog.
If you keep this option to less, only first 256 chracters will be visible via RSS reader. So your readers will come to know that you have posted something new, but they will not be able to read full blog from RSS reader.

6) Setting -> email -> blogsend address
Here I would advice to give your email address. With this, you will get an email whenever you posts new blog. This will be helpful if you want to forward your blog to someone else. Instead of sending blog link, you can simply forward an email to your friend. In other way you will also have good collection of your blogs in your inbox! And anyhow right now, space is not an issue for any email users be it gmail, Yahoo, Rediff. Other way is, you can put mail address of your friend over here. Once you put email address of your friend, your friend will get an email to confirm that he is agreeing to get your blogs on an email . After confirming this, your friend will automatically get your blog in an email whenever you post some new thing!!
With this, let me also put my worries over here. I do not know how to do following things. Can anyone help me?
1) How can I get label cloud? Any HTML code for that? (I know how to put label list. I want label cloud)
2) How can I do underlining, strike through and put smileys in blog?
3) How can I add top 5 commented blogs?
1) Settings -> Comment -> Who can comment.
My advice: Tick 'Anyone' radio button.
Reasoning:
If you are a beginner, you would like to receive more and more comments. You would love to get comments from anyone. Google search or say Google blog search may lead anyone to land onto your page if your blog contents are good enough. Reason was by default blogger was asking for Google username and password to comment. Everyone is very busy now a days and so no one will care to enter username and password just to put a comment on your blog.
2) Setting -> Comment -> Enable Comment ModerationSo at least initially I would advice to make this commenting open to everyone. Later on, you can always change this option.
If I had kept moderation on, I could have just rejected comment. So catch here is, always keep comment moderation on.
Disadvantage with this is, you will require to check your mails regularly and accept comments. But as being a beginner you will not be getting too many comments. So it is okay to keep this on.
If you are beginner, do not enable this. If you are matured blogger who has dedicated and retruning readers, you can make it on.
If you are not comfortable enough in moderating a comment, I mean if you are not checking your mails regularly, you can make moderation off and keep this comment notification on. By keeping this on you will come to know how many comments had been made & who and all have made a comments.
Note: For beginners RSS reader concept may look like a rocket science. But it is not. Just go on Google reader and you will come to know how easy is that to start using RSS reader. So if you are beginner, keep this to full so that your reader can read your blogs from RSS reader as soon as you post something new.
6) Setting -> email -> blogsend address

"The search boxes built throughout Vista are hard-wired to Microsoft's own desktop search product, with no way for users to choose an alternate provider from these visible search access points. Likewise, Vista makes it impractical to turn off Microsoft's search index."
- Google spokesman Ricardo Reyes
- Shortly after Vista was released to consumers at the end of January, Apple revealed that there were compatibility issues between its iTunes player and Microsoft's OS. More recently, Adobe said it won't put in the work to make its current line of publishing products (i.e. PhotoShop, Dreamweaver) compatible with Vista. In fact, there are more applications that don't support Vista, than do.
- Microsoft agreed to modify Windows Vista's default search options with the operating system's first Service Pack. The changes follow Google complaint to the US Department of Justice that Windows Vista's search violates the terms of Microsoft's anti-trust agreement with the US government and prosecuting states intended to close the company's long-running browser court case.
- After software giant Microsoft complained about search kingpin Google's planned $3.1 billion purchase of online advertising company DoubleClick, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission opened a probe last month.

Yahoo! and the future of the Internet
2/03/2008 11:45:00 AM Posted by David Drummond, Senior Vice President, Corporate Development and Chief Legal Officer
The openness of the Internet is what made Google -- and Yahoo! -- possible. A good idea that users find useful spreads quickly. Businesses can be created around the idea. Users benefit from constant innovation. It's what makes the Internet such an exciting place.
So Microsoft's hostile bid for Yahoo! raises troubling questions. This is about more than simply a financial transaction, one company taking over another. It's about preserving the underlying principles of the Internet: openness and innovation.
Could the acquisition of Yahoo! allow Microsoft -- despite its legacy of serious legal and regulatory offenses -- to extend unfair practices from browsers and operating systems to the Internet? In addition, Microsoft plus Yahoo! equals an overwhelming share of instant messaging and web email accounts. And between them, the two companies operate the two most heavily trafficked portals on the Internet. Could a combination of the two take advantage of a PC software monopoly to unfairly limit the ability of consumers to freely access competitors' email, IM, and web-based services? Policymakers around the world need to ask these questions -- and consumers deserve satisfying answers.
This hostile bid was announced on Friday, so there is plenty of time for these questions to be thoroughly addressed. We take Internet openness, choice and innovation seriously. They are the core of our culture. We believe that the interests of Internet users come first -- and should come first -- as the merits of this proposed acquisition are examined and alternatives explored.

Could Microsoft now attempt to exert the same sort of inappropriate and illegal influence over he Internet that it did with the PC? While the Internet rewards competitive innovation, Microsoft has frequently sought to establish proprietary monopolies -- and then leverage its dominance
into new, adjacent markets.
