O mere dil ke chain - Guitar instrumental

"You are dreaming too small, if you are not being laughed or criticized at least once a week for the size of your dream"

Well, I was not being laughed or criticized for my last instrumental-cum-vocal song "Ajeeb dasta he ye". So I guess, I had not bored you enough. And for the same reason, I present you an another song sung and strummed by me on Guitar. And the song is an evergreen one, "O mere dil ke chain" from Movie "Mere Jeevan Saathi".

Few comments in advance about this recording:
- Recording quality is same as all other previous instrumentals. And reason for lower quality recording is also same, unavailability of sophisticated recording instrument.
- My vocals are not as good as my guitar strumming.
- Guitar strumming is been good, but you may not find it up-to the scale of original song. I mean, it may seem a bit faster or probably guitar strumming may seem altogether different than original song. But that is by choice. Its intentional.
- And last, do listen to this in headphone. In speakers, Guitar strumming is not sounding that effective.

Okay, so I let you listen to it now. Do enjoy it. And don't forget to comment.

Ajeeb dasta he ye - Guitar instrumental

So, here I am back with one more instrumental-cum-vocal song of mine. I know very well that my vocals are not so good. But still I had taken a chance and so I let you judge about my vocals. Also, due to lack of sophisticated recorder, this recording is also been done with my mobile phone recorder and so please pardon me if you may have to listen to any kind of unwanted noise.

Initial part I have played using combination of Guitar lead and chords both. And than after I have played actual guitar strumming, adding my vocals to it. I hope you would at least love strumming, if not whole song. For those who knows to play guitar, guitar chords are quite simple. They are, C major than G major and than F major. Same sequence continues in same order for the initial part of the song.

Enjoy listening to it. Do comment and rate. And let me know if you are not getting which chord to play when. I will post chords in better way.

Give me some sunshine - My guitar instrumental

Guys,

So here I am again, to amaze you with my Guitar strumming. Well, my voice is not so nice and that is why I had to take help of an original song. And yes, I dont have better sophisticated recorder than that of my cell phone :). So, in background if you are listning some dog barking, child crying, people laughing sounds, you need not comment about that in my post. That is not a problem. I am already aware of it :).

So, do enjoy this very nice track from movie, "3 Idiots" and yes, do let me know about my strumming in comment section.

Useful guitar widget from google

--------
If you are not in a mood of reading this blog, you can visit this link where you will see 'useful guitar widget of google'. If you like widget shown in above mentioned link, you can download it for you web page from here.
--------

While searching Google widgets for web page, I came across very useful widget. I was searching for widget which I can put on my blog and which can be useful for all visitors (for returning visitors and non-returning visitors both, jo bar-bar aaye uska bhi bhala aur jo bar-bar na aaye uska bhi bhala ... ). Unfortunetely I was unable to find any widget which can be useful to all, widget which everyone can use. As i have not found useful-to-all widget I convined myself saying that that it is really very difficult to make everyone happy. Than I planned to make only some people happy who shares common interest with me. So i tried to find widgets of my interest. I tried searching for widget on guitar and I found this widget very useful for them who wants to learn guitar as well to them who already knows guitar.

I had planned to put widget on my blog page as an page element, but this widget is too broad to fit into blog page without spoiling page and made it look odd. So I didn't go for that option. So I tried to paste HTML code of that widget on one blog (So that one blog only looks odd, not all which can happen if I add it as page element). But there also I didn't succeeded. Guitar applet was shown on blog but not as per my expectation. May be my expectation was too high. But without coming to a point where your expectations doesn't meet, you can't be sure that expectations are too high to get met. At time when expectations are set, no one can surely say with integrity that these expectations are too high to get met. But anyone can point you to a possibility that these expectations may not be met. But this pointing-to-a-possibility will be presented in such manner that you will easily get discouraged by it.

Anyways instead of reading what all problems I have faced and what I had thought about it and how I satisfied myself, you can just go for using it here (same link as I has mentioned above). If you have your web page you can paste code on your page and startes using it. Before using it on your web page if you wants to have a look at it, just click here.

Guitar tuning explained

--------------------
I have blogged about how to tune guitar. This blog explains why part of tuning a guitar.
--------------------

In total 7 characters C D E F G A B are employed to indicate different sounds. These characters are called notes.
Interval is a distance between two notes. Smallest interval used in western music is half step. Interval between c and c# is half step. No intermediate sound is defined in between c and c#. Difference between any of the two above mentioned immediate notes are full step.

Guitar strings are called as E, A, D, G, B ,E (From thick to thin) as shown below.

Now let us look how these same notes are mapped on keyboard. Figure shown below shows, how C D E F G A B are mapped on keyboard :

On guitar we have A string after E string. If you look in above shown figure, distance between E and and A is, 5 keys (in terms of number of keys) and 3 whole (or full) step.

On guitar if you move from one fret to immediate next fret , it is half step. There is 2 exceptions to this rule. First, if you move from E to immediate next fret it will be F and difference between E & F is whole step. Second, if you move from B to immediate next fret it will be C and difference between B & C is whole step. Difference between open string and first fret (top most) is also a half step with above mentioned two exceptions. Explaining first exception, if you play E string pressing from first fret it will give F and difference between E & F is whole step. Explaining second exception, if you play B string pressing from first fret it will give C and difference between B & C is whole step.

On guitar if you play E string (Thick one) open, sound will resemble to E and than if you play same E string pressing it from 5th fret, it will resemble to A. Remember that your 2nd string (counting from thick to thin) is also named A. That means If you play E string pressing it from 5th fret and play A string open, it should give same sound. So if you don't have keyboard or guitar pitch pipe with you and if you still want to tune your guitar, you can tighten your E string (FYI : possibility of getting E string de-tuned is very less because of its thickness) according to your own convenience and than tune A string as mentioned above.

Similar reasoning applies to tuning of all other strings. Remember that to tune B string you need to press G string from 4th fret and make it sound same as B string. For tuning of all other strings yo need to press string from 5th fret.

Only to tune B string you need to press string from 4th. Why is this so??
Reason is in above shown figure. Distance between G and B is, 4 keys (in terms of number of keys) and 2 whole (or full) step.

Now recall that if you move from one fret to immediate next fret , it is half step and difference between open string and first fret (top most) is also a half step (exception of this rule is mentioned above). Means on guitar if you play G string open, sound will resemble to G and than if you play same G string pressing it from 4th fret, it will resemble to B. Your 5th string is also named as B. That means If you play G string pressing it from 4th fret and play B string open, it should give same sound!!

FYI (Related talk):
Casio company is so popular in India that people sometimes uses casio brand name to indicate keyboard!! Same thing is applicable to brand name Honda, Maruti, Colgate etc. People are used to call any damn 2-wheeler as Honda, 4-wheeler as Maruti, Tooth paste as colgate !!!

Blog series - Learning Guitar lesson 2

On second day I had done fingering exercise.

Look at figure below showing fret numbers:

Now look at following figure which shows that first finger will be used to play on first fret, second fingre for second fret, third on third and fourth on fourth :

Now with this finger position play 1323 1232 1234.
Means play like this
1-first fingre on first fret,
3-third fingre on third fret,
2-second fingre on second fret,
3-third fingre on third fret, .....

Similarly you can have your own pattern like 1322, 1221, 1232 and exercise your fingers. Play this pattern on all the frets and all the strings. You can start with E (thick one). Play a pattern on first 4 fret. Than move to second 4 fret on same E string. Do it like this untill all the frets on E string is over. Than go to next string. That is A and follow the same process.

On second day I learnt only one pattern and that is what I have mentioned above (1323 1232 1234).

Blog series - Learning Guitar lesson 1

On first day I had learned to play with open strings. Guitar strings are named (from thinner to thicker) E-B-G-D-A-E.

Following figure shows string names

It is advisable to have rest with your right hand's pinky finger while strumming a string with first and second fingers having a plectrum in hand.

Exercise :
E(up) B(down) G(up) D(down) A(up) E(down)
E(up) A(down) D(up) G(down) B(up) E(down)

Like this :

I believe that having mastery on fundamentals is distinguishing factor between winer and looser. This is the thing which can distinguish you from others after reaching some stage. Without exercising this as well you can start playing songs. If you will not have your fundamentals clear, you will be able to play slow songs but faster songs will be your lacking area. If I tell you the notes of songs you can play it. You will be able to play song slowly slowly, playing one by one note. You can remember a note as well but as your fingers are not moving fast you will not be able to play song with proper tempo. So mastery on this fundamental is must.

I had done other exercises on this open strings on first day. Exercise I had done are following (Play up down stroke):
EB BG GD DA AE (Moving from bottom string to top string)
EA AD DG GB BE (Moving from top string to bottom string)

EBG BGD GDA DAE (Moving from bottom string to top string)
EAD ADG DGB GBE (Moving from top string to bottom string)

EG BD GA DE (Moving from bottom string to top string)
ED AG DB GE (Moving from top string to bottom string)

Similarly you can have your own exercise.
Like EGBD BDGA GADE
EDAG AGBD DBGE .

Keep on exercising on this fundamentals. I had exercised this for 1 week.

Blog series - Learning Guitar

From today onwards I am going to start a new blog series. I have named it Learning guitar. This series will teach you (do i need to say teach you online?) everything that I know about Guitar. Motivation behind this blog series is very well said quote, "Best way to learn something is to teach it". Actually I have started a guitar classes last week. I have learned 2 lessons. And I personally felt that Guitar can be very well learned under some one's guidance. So I thought to start posting about things I will learn in classes. My classes are 2 days a week means 2 hours only a week. In 2 hour I can get guidance only.Practice has to be done at room by yourself. So I thought why not to put this guidance on to blog and share it with everyone! I am also novice to guitar learning (I am novice to guitar not to music). All I have is guitar and my tutor's guidance. So you can let me become your virtual tutor and I will guide you to learn guitar.
I will blog on everything I know and my tutor has taught me. If you think that something is missing or something is misleading or something is contradicting, you can google (find) it. (for me google and find are synonymous of each other). For example, I will directly start blogging on 'playing open strings', I will not blog on which guitar to buy, what all type of guitars are available in market, how to tune a guitar, what are different parts of guitar is called etc.

For your information, I am not novice to music. I knows keyboard very well. So don't think that you are learning from unskilled person. People had appreciated me a lot after my performance in collage. Some of the comments which were written on my T-shirt on signature day) are "U just looks like A.R. REHMAN on casio", "Himesh Reshmiya of our class.", "... Key player in our band", "Great piano player" ...

I hope you will enjoy this series. For any comment, please write me at jaydipd.mehta@gmail.com or post a comment to related blog (I would prefer this). Okay than have a nice learning curve ahead and happy learning...

Standard guitar tuning method

Standard Guitar Tuning Method
Step 1:
The E String (Thick one). Tune the bottom E, as accurately as you can. Chances are it’s in tune anyways, being the thickest string it’s the least likely to detune itself than any of the others. If you have another instrument such as a Piano (which stays in tune for years), you can tune it to the 1st E below middle C. If you have no device or instrument handy just try to get it as accurate as possible, what really counts when you are playing is that the guitar is in tune with itself and any other instruments you might be playing with.

Step 2:
The A StringPlace the first finger of your left hand just behind the fifth fret on the bottom E string. That’s an A note. Keep your finger on that fret. Now pick the fifth and six strings in turn, gently adjusting the fifth string tuning peg until the two notes are the same.

Step 3:
The D StringPlace the first finger of your left hand just behind the fifth fret on the A string. That’s a D note. Tune the 4th string (the D note) to that.

Step 4:
The G StringPlace the first finger of your left hand just behind the fifth fret on the D string. That’s a G note. Tune your G string to that note.

Step 5:
The B StringPlace the first finger of your left hand just behind the forth fret (note the B string is the only one that comes from a different position the forth fret, the rest are from the 5th fret).

Step 6:
Tuning the E StringPlace the first finger of your left hand just behind the fifth fret on the B string. That’s a E note.
